Australian Apprenticeships

An Australian Apprenticeship is the general term given to both traineeships and apprenticeships.

Traineeships

Trainees complete their certificates as they develop their skills in the workplace, under the supervision of an employer. Training is provided through a Registered Training Organisation (such as TAFE or private training providers). The training provider assesses the trainee and awards the certificates on successful completion.

Generally, trainees would commence at Certificate II and then go on to Certificate III or above. Certificate III is generally viewed as the 'trade level' qualification, with many sectors now encouraging studies at the diploma and higher level. In many States it is possible to undertake a Certificate II as part of a secondary school program, such as a school-based Traineeship..

Employers of a trainee may be eligible for a range of incentives from the Commonwealth government, and other assistance measures from State/Territory governments. Check with an Australian Apprenticeship Centre for eligibility requirements and the available amounts.

Trainees are paid a wage by the employer during their training and, where eligible, a living away from home allowance is paid by the Commonwealth government.

Traineeships are not just for young people. Anyone of working age can be employed as a trainee. You don't even need to be unemployed. Existing employees may be eligible under some circumstances. You will need to check this.

Traineeships offer a real advantage by providing a nationally recognised qualification and relevant industry skills.

Apprenticeships

Apprenticeships are the same as traineeships except for a couple of differences. Apprenticeships are of a three (3) or four (4) year duration, whereas traineeships last up to twelve (12) months. At the end of an apprenticeship the employee is awarded the qualification gained (as for trainees) but with their trade certificate also.

Apprenticeships are only available in the following rural industries:

  • Horticulture (Gardening)
  • Horticulture (Landscape Gardening)
  • Horticulture (Nursery Person)
  • Horticulture (Turf Management)
